The private library Beit El Bennani, owned and operated by Mohamed Bennani, partnered with CAORC member Centre d’Etudes Maghrèbines á Tunis to organize and digitize the Mustapha Bouchoucha photograph collection. The collection, held at the Beit El Bennani, contains 8155 images that depict people, events, views and objects primarily relating to Tunisia. Photographs of people include images of Tunisian political and cultural figures as well as people involved in the daily activities of life. Civic leaders include Lamine Bey, Moncef Bey, Habib Bourguiba, Admiral Esteva, Kadhis, Muftis, and prominent attendants to the Bey family. A small but important group of images depict Charles de Gaulle, Prince Faisal (King of Saudi Arabia), and other heads of state during their visits to Tunisia. Unidentified people are shown at work and at leisure, during public events and religious feasts, at cafes and along the oceanfront, selling goods at the central market, and visiting the mosque. Views of the built environment in Tunis and Tunisia include public buildings, parks, roadways, mosques, and palaces. Some of these show the central Medina area with its market, religious buildings, commercial buildings, and government buildings. A small group of images are travel photographs taken in France, Italy, Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Eastern Europe (1946 to 1960).

The photo collection was acquired from Ms. Ulfet Bouchoucha, daughter of Mustapha Bouchoucha, who inherited them from her late father and deposited them at the Beit el Bennani in 2006. The copyright is held by Ms Ulfet Bouchoucha and the Bouchoucha family. Rights and permissions are managed by Beit al Bennani (11 Bis Boulevard Bab Menara, 1008 Tunis, Tunisia) . Beit el Bennani is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday. Group visits require an appointment.

The collection was digitized by the Centre d’Etudes Maghrèbines á Tunis for the Local Archives and Libraries at Overseas Research Centers project (LALORC) organized by the American Institute of Yemeni Studies and the Council of the American Overseas Research Centers with funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s TICFIA program.
